With the upcoming residential developments, including RiverHouse Condominiums, coming to Downtown Guelph, the core has seen a number of new businesses begin to take flight. As more residents move downtown, the demand for cafes, shops and various restaurants will grow along with the population. Three new offerings have popped up over the last little while, so maybe there’s something new that isn’t even on your radar.
Last month, the Sapphire Cafe & Lounge opened up on MacDonell St., serving up delicious sandwiches and incredible coffee creations. They have a patio outside and feature the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing drink with friends. Though still in the application process for a full liquor license, they host licensed private events for up to thirty, and feature delectable dishes prepared by their executive chef, Matt Bell. You can check out their full offerings at www.sapphireguelph.ca or visit them on Twitter, @sapphireguelph.
July 4th was much more than another American birthday for the Downtown. It featured the unveiling of a re-born Guelph landmark, the Western Hotel. A saloon-inspired bar, the Western is soon to be famous for its gourmet burgers, smoked ribs and steaks. With a country twist unlike that of any of its downtown neighbours, the Western Hotel could be a popular destination year-round. Before you drop in, have a look at their daily specials (like All-You-Can-Eat-Rib Tuesdays) or interact with them on Twitter, @WesternGuelph.
Last but not least, today is the launch of 39 Carden Street, a bistro featuring French-inspired cuisine. Their restaurant menu features an array of exquisite dishes including Confit Duck Leg & an Ontario Rack of Lamb. If you’re of a selective palette, 39 Carden Street could soon become a regular stop on your downtown tour. Their facade features a sharp black and white banner, one of the classiest in the city. Their full menu is available here on the web, and their twitter account (@39CardenStreet) is very interactive among the downtown community.
So the next time you’re in town and looking for a place to eat -be it for a snack or a full meal- have another look downtown, chances are there’s at least a few places you’ve never been.
